Kaharoa Reservoir Upgrade

Client:  Rotorua Lakes Council
Date:  2018 – Current

We were engaged by Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) to conduct design works to upgrade a rural potable water reservoir north of Rotorua.  Preliminary works included an investigation of the seismic strength of an existing 1000m3 reinforced concrete reservoir.

Various options were considered to replace or rehabilitate the reservoir or construct a new steel or concrete reservoir to provide up to 2000mto current code requirements.  Following consideration of cost and operational resilience requirements, it was decided to rehabilitate the existing reservoir and construct a new 500m3 concrete reservoir to improve the storage redundancy and provide operation during rehabilitating of the existing reservoir.

Following this, we carried out detailed design, geotechnical investigations and tender document preparation.  The final design was to strengthen the seismic resistance and water-tightness of the existing reservoir, to construct a new 500m3 concrete reservoir, and all associated pipework to connect into the existing network.  Construction is currently in progress, with the new reservoir estimated to be completed by December 2020.
