Dust Monitoring

Client:  Evolution Mining NZ
Date: 2016

Evolution Mining NZ Pty Ltd (ENZ) engaged us in early 2016 as independent environmental consultants to collect and report baseline environmental data and prepare a preliminary assessment to support exploration drilling at Puhipuhi in Northland.  The Australian based gold mining company holds an exploration permit over the Puhipuhi area, which requires them to undertake a program of exploration drilling.

The baseline environmental assessment composed nine individual programmes including ground and surface water sampling, stream sediment and macroinvertebrate sampling, noise monitoring, terrestrial ecology, soil characterisation and dust monitoring. 4 Field assessments and data collection involved extensive health and safety, field work logistics and iwi consultation.

Background dust monitoring, specifically dust deposition rate assessments (ISO/DSI 4222.2) were undertaken at four locations, three within and one outside the exploration tenement during 2016.

The measured dust deposition rates were all below 2 g/m²/30 days with the majority below 1 g/m²/30 days. These results are in good agreement with the values quoted in the Good Practice Guide for Assessing and Managing Dust of general dust deposition levels measured in New Zealand.

Key Aspects:

  • Install dust position gauges
  • Manage dust deposition rate data acquisition
  • Analyse and report results
