Waikato Expressway – Effects on Groundwater

Client:  New Zealand Transport Agency
Date:  2014

The Waikato Expressway is a proposed four-lane highway from the Bombay Hills to south of Cambridge.  Along the Hamilton section of the Expressway, road cuts up to 11m deep are planned, eight of which are expected to intersect the water table.  PDP developed two MODFLOW groundwater models to predict drawdowns, assess effects on sensitive receptors and support the resource consent application.  Within 1km of the proposed cuts, nearly 200 wells and springs have been identified which could be adversely affected by the road cuts.

We presented technical evidence at the resource consent hearing, and in June 2014 the consent application was successfully granted by Waikato Regional Council.  PDP has also provided advice on the long term monitoring regime and design of groundwater control measures during construction and operation.

Key Aspects:

  • Groundwater modelling
  • Assessment of effects to support consent application
  • Presentation of technical evidence at hearing
