Roding River Community Water Supply

Client:  Landmark Lile Ltd on behalf of Nelson City Council
Date:  2015 – 2016

We were engaged to prepare an assessment of effects arising from the existing Nelson City Council water supply take from the Roding River, near Nelson.

Nelson City Council has been abstracting water from the Roding River since 1941 to supply Nelson with potable water via a water supply network.  The Roding River abstraction provides about one-third of the water supply for the city.  Water is abstracted at the Roding Weir and is piped to Nelson.

The assessment carried out by our team focused on determining the effects of the abstraction on surface water, groundwater and spring-fed streams on the Waimea Plains.

The purpose of the surface water assessment was to determine the effects on reliability for existing water users and to quantify residual flows within the Roding River and downstream river environment (Wairoa River and Waimea River).  Various flow regimes for the Roding River site were modelled for both average and extremely dry seasons to indicate reliability and residual flows under a range of conditions.

Key Aspects:

  • Hydrological analyses of the Roding River
  • Water supply reliability assessment
  • Groundwater impact assessment
  • Resource consenting
