Roding River Community Water Supply

PDP were engaged to prepare an assessment of effects arising from the existing Nelson City Council water supply take from the Roding River, near Nelson.

Nelson City Council has been abstracting water from the Roding River since 1941 to supply Nelson with potable water via a water supply network.  The Roding River abstraction provides about one third of the water supply for the city.  Water is abstracted at the Roding Weir and is piped to Nelson.

The assessment carried out by PDP focused on determining the effects of the abstraction on surface water, groundwater and springfed streams on the Waimea Plains.

The purpose of the surface water assessment was to determine the effects on reliability for existing water users and to quantify residual flows within the Roding River and downstream river environment (Wairoa River and Waimea River). Various flow regimes for the Roding River site were modelled for both an average and extreme dry seasons to provide an indication of reliability and residual flows under a range of conditions.

Key Aspects:

  • Hydrological analyses of the Roding River
  • Water supply reliability assessment
  • Groundwater impact assessment
  • Resource consenting
