Riding for the Disabled – Stream Offset Investigation

Client:  Auckland Council (Healthy Waters Department)
Date:  2018 – 2019
Cost:  $12,050

We were first engaged in 2018 as environmental consultants for Auckland Council to undertake a Stream Ecological Valuation (SEV) assessment of a tributary of the Opanuku Stream located in the Riding for the Disabled Property in Henderson Valley Park.  A key objective of the assessment was to determine the ecological potential for restoration of the watercourse to then inform a stream restoration conceptual design.  As part of the assessment, a planting plan was also provided as guidance for restoration efforts.

The SEV found there was moderate ecological value (score of 0.54) in the Opanuku tributary and this could be further enhanced through riparian planting to 0.74. This would also include the removal of gabion baskets restricting fish passage and recontouring some of the banks to prevent erosion.  The hypothetical enhancements would also improve control of flood flows which were noted to be problematic at the site.

Key Aspects:

  • Ecological assessment
  • Completion of a representative SEV over the stream section proposed for restoration
  • A review of flow characteristics
  • Preparation of a site planting plan
  • Determine potential SEV score for enhancement opportunities
  • Qualitative assessment of mitigation options
