Reporoa Water Supply Network Optimisation

Client:  Rotorua Lakes Council
Date:  2020 – Ongoing

We were engaged by Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) to assess water supply network upgrade requirements for Reporoa.  The town is currently supplied by the Wharepapa and Deep Creek Springs.  Wharepapa is a gravity supply to the North of Reporoa and Deep Creek is pumped from the South.  The original town water supply was Wharepapa Spring but there is now a need to upgrade the network to be supplied from Deep Creek.  This would provide additional capacity and redundancy in the water supply network, enabling maintenance or flow restriction at the Wharepapa Spring in the event of a contamination event such as a volcanic eruption affecting the Wharepapa source.

InfoWorks WS modelling software was used to investigate the extent and level of the required upgrades.  This modelling was completed using RLC’s existing InfoWorks WS model last updated in 2014.

Options for upgrading the pipe network to increase resilience for current and future supply demands were assessed and cost.  These options aimed to ensure there were adequate flow and pressure throughout the network.  Options to minimise operational costs with increasing the supply from Wharepapa are also being investigated with RLC.
