Land Disposal Assessment for Duvauchelle WWTP – Surface Water Assessment

Client:  Christchurch City Council
Date:  2019 – 2020

We were contracted in 2019 to undertake a baseline ecological and water quality assessment of Pawson’s Stream and an unnamed watercourse that flow through the grounds at Akaroa Golf Club (AGC), Duvauchelle.  The assessment was part of an investigation by Christchurch City Council into the feasibility of land applying recycled water from the Duvauchelle wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at the AGC.

The results of this assessment indicate that the two streams flowing through the AGC are in good ecological condition, with high-quality native fish communities and macroinvertebrate communities representing fair to excellent stream health.  However, agricultural land use upstream of the AGC has impacted water quality, resulting in elevated concentrations of the faecal indicator bacteria E. coli and plant-available nutrients.  A decline in macroinvertebrate community metrics was also was observed between upstream and downstream reaches, likely resulting from a lack of riparian vegetation.

Key Aspects:

  • Information review of relevant water quality and ecological values
  • Water quality sampling
  • Macroinvertebrate sampling
  • Habitat assessment
  • Periphyton assessment
  • Data analysis and interpretation
